It’s no secret than in recent months Instagram has begun only promoting Reels. If you’re an Instagram user who has only been sharing photos and graphics, you’re likely starting to become discouraged by your lackluster results. On the other hand, if you’ve been consistently creating these short-form videos, you’ve probably seen a dramatic increase in your reach and other metrics. Regardless of what you’ve done in the past, I’m here to tell you that for the time being, Reels should absolutely have a place in your Instagram Strategy. Although creating video content can sound intimidating, there's no doubt that you can make Reels work for your business - no matter what industry you’re in!
Before we dive into creating Reels, let’s talk a little bit about what they are. Reels are a relatively new feature on Instagram that allows users to create up to 90 second videos set to music. Reels can be shared to your feed, your stories, or just to the portion of Instagram dedicated solely to scrolling through Reels. These short-form videos (generally the shorter the video the better), were created by Instagram to give creators an avenue to reach new audiences. When you check out the analytics on one of your Reels, chances are that 70% or more of your Reel viewers will be users who aren’t already following you. Needless to say, using Reels is a great way to reach potential followers and grow your account.
While “video creation” sounds like it might be something better left to influencers and content creators, it’s simply not true. If you spend a few minutes scrolling through the Reels section of your Instagram, chances are you’ll come across more videos taken on iPhones than professional cameras. All it takes to create a quality Reel is stepping outside of your comfort zone and tapping into a bit of creativity.
The best way to start utilizing Reels is to scroll on your phone - seriously! When you look at what other people are creating, you’ll start to get ideas for your own content. Maybe you can adapt a new trend to fit your business, or maybe you liked the way certain audio sounded with a certain type of clip. When you start watching Reels with intention, you’ll start finding inspiration for your own Reels, no matter what business you’re in.
As it is with anything, practice makes perfect. The first Reel you create won’t be perfect, and that’s okay! Not only will your Reel creation skills improve the more times you make them, but your results will improve too. Finding success with Reels takes consistency. If you can commit to posting a Reel once every week, and continue to increase that number, you’ll be shocked to see how quickly your work pays off. The most important thing you can do is start, and then learn as you go. Get out of your comfort zone, start taking some videos, and tap into your creativity. You’ll be a pro in no time!
